We had two experiences in the First Hotel in two nights. The first night was in the main wing. The main wing room was small, the decor was suffering and there were cockroaches everywhere. We bumped up to the tower wing on the second night and were very pleased with the room. Clean, big and reasonable decor and most importantly, we did not see any cockroaches. If you book online, the price difference isn't too bad. The service at the hotel is good.

Although a number of my ratings were excellent my overall satisfaction was fair because of two factors that let the hotel down. We were told we could check in at 12pm so got the boat at 11am. After arriving at the hotel at 11.45 we then did not get into our room until 13.30! This happened to us the last time we went and it also happens regularly to other people. The problem is that they say you can check in at 12pm but you don't have to check out until 12pm so they have no time to clean the rooms. It would be far better if they stated check in time as 14.00 so they had time to clean the rooms and avoid the frustration of tired travellers that just want to unpack and relax.
Second, it says in large print that transfers between Seree Ban Phe and Samet are free. It's only after careful investigation that you realise it doesn't actually mean free transfer between Seree Ban Phe and the resort. It is really misleading and unfair to suggest the transfer is free when you have to pay for the 'taxi' ride from the pier to the resort. They are massively over priced when you can get close to an hours ride in a metred, air conditioned taxi in Bangkok for 150 Baht. Going along in a Song Tao is part of the experience of Thailand so I wouldn't change it - it just clearly does not need to cost that much. We did not realise we had to pay for the transport from pier to resort until we got to the front desk. The first time we went I had to pay as we checked out. The second time we went I paid at check in and was surprised so asked if that was for a return trip and they said yes. Then on check out I was asked to pay again. To add to the frustration the amount I paid was different both times. We pay the money to the front desk, not to the drivers so no doubt they will only get a fraction of what the guests actually pay in total. Why doesn't the hotel just make the whole transfer free and include the cost of it in the price? If they are not willing to do that they should at least state on their website that you will be expected to pay 150 Baht each time to be transfered from the pier to the resort.
Both problems are unnecessary considering the annoying frustration they cause. It is bad business sense to say a customer can have something when you don't really mean it. Check in should be a time you can guarantee your guest will be able to go into their rooms. Then if the room is ready early the business earns positive points because the guest can get in early. Similarly, paying for the taxi ride is annoying but not half as annoying as being given the impression you will not have to pay to get from Seree Ban Phe to the resort and then being asked for more money on top of what you have already paid for the resort. Saying transport is provided free makes customers very happy because they feel they are getting a really good deal. When that idea is found to not be true it leaves a sour taste.
In summary, I live in Bangkok and my family and I really enjoy staying at Koh Samet. We've been to Saikaew Beach Resort twice now and both times myself and my family have had a fantastic experience. The service was excellent and we really felt special but I will not be returning because I don't like being told I can have things that make me happy only to find the company don't really mean it and were just saying it to get my money. It is a real shame because I would love to come back again. Maybe I will consider doing so when the issues have been sorted.
