The hotel in Phnom Phen was awful on many levels. We were put in a smoking room (even though we wanted a non-smoking one). The beds were terrible, and the mattress practically sinks to the floor. There was also an awful smell in the bathroom. Best yet, the room was over a hotel night club and there was a terrible thumping that came up through three floors and prevented me from sleeping. Beyond just the facillities, the staff at that hotel was awful in terms of their customer service. They were generally rude and unhelpful when it came to cashing travellers checks, providing change, and answering certain questions. (The only thing they were good at was scheduling a wake-up call.) In one of the worse moments, I asked the concierge for help in finding a restaurant that was recommended by the airline magazine. He could not find it on a map and would not call the number provided in the magazine. When I asked why he would not call the restaurant, he said that I would have to make the phone call from my room and the phone at the desk would not make external calls. I have _never_ in all of my international travels (and I travel internationally regularly for work) had a concierge who refused to help me call a restaurant where I was interested in eating and/or told me that he could not make an external phone call from the phone at the concierge desk. All in all, this hotel was awful and I would _not_ recommend it at all.
Our hotel in Siem Riep, Hotel Angkor, was much better. The customer service was much better, although the service at the restaurant was very slow. At least the intent was much better. |

We found Bangkok very expensive. Food particularly was expensive at The Peninsula. This is the result of exchange rates not being as good as when we previously visited Bangkok as well as significant increases in charges by the hotel, I think. |
