A 30-minute boat ride from Lumut brings visitors to the lovely island resort of Pangkor. The island is populated by fisher folk on the eastern coastline and is famous for its ikan bilis (anchovies) and squids. The real attractions here, however, are the enchanting beaches on the western coastline.
Pantai Puteri Dewi (Beach of the Lovely Princess) with its white sand, unspoiled natural surroundings and sparkling bay offers elegant resort hotel facilities for a perfectly relaxing holiday. Site of the Pan Pacific Resort, this stretch of beach offers guests elegant accommodation, convention room, indoor and outdoor sport facilities, a golf course and facilities for snorkeling and windsurfing.
For a bit of history, visit the old Dutch Fort at Teluk Gadung. Built in 1670, it served as a Dutch stronghold against attacks by the pirates and local Malays until a ferocious attack by the latter forced them out of Pangkor. In 1743, the fort was rebuilt and made a garrison for 60 Dutch soldiers.
If solitude amid quiet coves and unspoiled bays is what you seek, then Teluk Nipah, Tortoise Bay, Teluk Dalm and Teluk Champadak are the places to stay. Marvellous for swimming or just basking in the sun, they offer complete privacy amid lush green surroundings. Teluk Nipah is particularly ideal for snorkeling and diving. As one of Pulau Pangkor's sea parks, it is blessed with spectacular marine life and a vast coral reef.
Pantai Pasir Bogak is the largest and most popular destination on Pulau Pangkor due to its large crescent-shaped beach and numerous shade trees. It is also an idyllic spot for picnicking and a range of water sports and beach activities. Here, you can find ample accommodation ranging from hotels, a government rest house to A-frame huts, to facilities for boating and fishing.
To get to Pulau Pangkor, there are ferry services operating at half-hourly intervals from Lumut to the island.
The nearby "Fantasy Island" of Pulau Pangkor Laut, a satellite of Pangkor, boasts lush tropical surroundings, crystal clear water and some of the finest beaches in the region. Spread along the famed Emerald Bay here is fronting powdery white beaches and offering its guests an exclusive holiday in a totally private setting amidst incredibly beautiful surroundings. Off Coral Beach, divers will be delighted with the rich diversity of colorful marine life which abounds in the coral reefs. Water skiing, wind surfing, parasailing, canoeing, jungle trekking, deep sea fishing and island hopping are among the galore of activities to be enjoyed in Pangkor and its neighboring islands.
The Pulau Pangkor Laut can be reached by regular scheduled ferry services between Lumut and Pulau Pangkor Laut daily. The journey time by a ferry from Pulau Pangkor is 15 minutes.
