River & Longhouse Safaris
These are the must experienced-tours when in Sarawak.
Day 01
Depart hotel in the morning for home of the Dayaks. The journey will take about 4 hours by road and 1 hour by motorized boat. En route, stop at a pepper garden before proceeding to Serian. After lunch, continue journey until the bank of Skrang River where the motorized boat ride begins. Pass through cool, thick, overhanging jungle foliage before arriving at the Iban or Sea Kayak Longhouse. Observe the lifestyle of the natives as they go about their daily chores such as basket or mat weaving, mending of the fishing nets, feeding of livestock and fishing. Enjoy dinner at the guesthouse. Try the "tuak" (a potent rice wine) and witness the traditional "Ngajat" or War Dance. Overnight at the guesthouse with basic modern amenities.
Day 02
After the breakfast at the guesthouse, participate in a jungle walk with an Iban man who will also demonstrate his blowpipe skills. For those who prefer to laze about, a dip in the cool water of the Skrang River is possible. Depart the longhouse motorized boat down the river. Transfer overland to Kuching with a stop-over at Serian for lunch. Arriving Kuching, transfer to hotel or airport.
Note: Due to primitive conditions, be prepared for some discomforts. Please bring light cotton clothing, good walking shoes, swim-wear, raincoat or umbrella, torch light and some gifts fro the people in the longhouse such as cigarettes for the chief and sweets for the children. Basic toiletries such as soap, toilet paper and towels are provided for the above trip.
