Attractions of Ipoh and its vicinity
 

Pasir Salak Historical Complex - Situated 70 kilometers south-west of Ipoh, the Pasir Salak Historical Complex is of special significance in the historical development of Malaysia as an independent and sovereign nation. It was here that the flames of Malay nationalism had their origins.

The assassination of the then British Resident of Perak, J.W.W Birch, sparked off a war between the British colonial administration and the Malays. This eventually led to the declaration of independence from colonial rule.

Within the complex is Mr. Birch's grave, as well as the site of Dato' Maharaja Lela's fortress, the Lela Rentaka cannons used against the British army and two beautiful examples of traditional Malay Rumah Kutai.

Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan - Malaysia's own equivalent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, this 23.5-meter-tall-pagoda-like structure is the pride of the town of Teluk Intan. Like its Italian counterpart, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan has a leftwards slant. Built in 1885, it was originally used as a covered water tank to store potable water for the immediate vicinity. Today, it stands as an architectural anachronism that still amazes visitors.

Ubudiah Mosque - Located at Bukit Chandan in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, the Ubudiah Mosque is reputed to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the country. Its magnificent golden domes and minarets are a testimony to the achievements of Islamic architecture. Construction of the mosque began during the reign of Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I, the 28th Sultan of Perak and it was officially opened in 1917.

Perak Royal Museum (Istana Kenangan) - Formerly known as the Istana Kenangan, the Perak Royal Museum is an architectural masterpiece as it was built in the traditional way without using a dingle nail. Situated near the Istana Iskandariah, the official residence of the Sultan, the museum houses the royal regalia, photographs of the royal family, illustrations and artifacts of the past and present rules of Perak.

Taiping - Taiping, meaning "Greta Peace" in Chinese, is a pleasant town known for its scenic Lake Gardens, quaint colonial buildings and cool, refreshing atmosphere. Located 95 kilometers north of Ipoh, near Kamunting where tin was first discovered, it was also the starting point fro the country's first railway which ran from Taiping to Port Weld.

Taiping Lake Gardens - The oldest lake gardens in the country, this park sprawls over 62 hectares at the foot of the hill resort of Bukit Larut. Magnificently sculptured out of the natural environment, these picture-postcard gardens present a serene and panoramic landscape with their lush greenery, lovely lakes and a profusion of colorful flowers and plants. The unforgettable sight here is the huge, ancient angsana trees with their drooping branches that seem to defy the law of gravity.

Within the Taiping Lake Gardens is the Taiping Zoo which houses an interesting collection of wild animals, reptiles and birds.

Bukit Larut - A former tea plantation, this charming hill resort is accessible only by a government-operated land rover service. Also known as Maxwell Hill, there are several holiday bungalows and rest houses equipped with basic facilities, A stay in Bukit Larut provides a relaxing retreat amidst the cool, crisp air and the surrounding vegetation. Visitors will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia at the summit, 1035 meters above sea level.

Bukit Merah Lake - Everywhere you look, a beautiful mountain view meets your eyes and it is mostly for this reason that visitors come to Bukit Merah Lake. Located along the North-South Expressway, 30 kilometers north of Taiping, this lake is one of the largest inland water bodies in the country. The lake holds many exotic species of tropical fishes, like the Ikan Ubi and the much sought-after Golden Arowana. The resort at Bukit Merah is a great holiday spot for the family as there recreational facilities like the water theme park adjacent to it and a host of activities such as boating, angling, jungle trekking and even an island where one can view orang utans.

Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary - Kuala Gula's main attraction is the wide variety of exotic birds that come here to nest. It is estimated that over 160 species of birds, some of which are protected, have been spotted. The "Milky Stork" is one particular species that has made its home here. The months between September to December are the best time to visit.

The sanctuary is also home to other animals like the smooth otter, dusky leaf monkey, long-tailed macaque and ridge-back dolphins.

The River Terrapin Breeding Center - Located at Bota Kanan, 40 kilometers from Ipoh, the River Terrapin Breeding Center was established in 1967 by the state authorities fro the conservation of this species of freshwater tortoise.

Visitors can seen the hatcheries and find out more about the habits and habitats of this riverine terrapin. It is also possible to see them laying their eggs in the wild, usually between the months of November and March.

Lumut - Lumut is locate don the coast, 86 kilometers southwest of Ipoh. A transit point to the popular resort island of Pulau Pangkor, Lumut has a pleasant beach of its own at Teluk Batik with chalets for rent. The annual Pesta Laut Lumut to "Lumut Sea Festival" is held at Teluk Batik with sea-sport competitions, cultural shows and fun fairs.

Teluk Rubiah - Located 6 kilometers from Teluk Batik, this resort boasts a splendid beach front with the 18-hole Royal Teluk Rubiah Country Club offering a wide range of facilities.

Banding Resort - Located within the Temenggor Lake, 35 kilometers from Gerik, this is the ideal place for anglers. The lake offers a bounty of fresh water fish such as Toman and Buang. It is also a popular destination fro trekkers and nature lovers.

Belum State Park - This unspoiled nature reserve offers hiking and trekking trials fro nature lovers. Its wide expanse of virgin forest is home to many exotic species of plants and insects as well as birds and wildlife.

The Naval Museum - The museum houses a collection of nautical artifacts and lithographs documenting the many vessels which have called at Lumut in days gone by.
