Attractions of Ipoh and its vicinity

This capital city of Perak used to be the pulse of the country's tin mining operations. Known as the City of Bougainvillaea, Ipoh's appeals lie in its clean streets, imaginative landscaped gardens, impressive pre-war buildings and its unique cave temples.

Ipoh Railway Station - Built in 1935, this imposing landmark at Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab combines Moorish architecture with modern embellishments. It bears a close resemblance to the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station; and like its counterpart, there is a Station Hotel within its premises.

Affectingly dubbed the "Taj Mahal of Ipoh" by the locals, it is fronted by a beautiful floral garden where the "Ipoh Tree" after which the city is named can be found.

Darul Ridzuan Museum - Located a short distance from the Railway Station, this museum displays interesting artifacts on the history of Ipoh and the state's mining and forestry industries. Built more than a hundred years ago, the museum building has a colorful history as it served in the past as home to the Malay Chieftains of Kinta and the British rulers.

Geological Museum - Established in 1957, the Geological Museum at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah houses a collection of over 600 samples of minerals, classified according to chemical content and structure. The museum is well-known for its exhibition of tins ore, including the best specimen of cassiterite in the world. There is also an impressive collection of fossils, precious stones and rock specimens.

Kek Lok Tong & Sam Poh Tong - These limestone cave temples located near Gunung Rapat on the outskirt of Ipoh are a sight to behold. They house impressive works of art with statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas set amidst the natural rock formations. One can savor vegetarian food, served here at the temples, in peaceful surroundings amidst lotus ponds.

Perak Tong - A magnificent limestone cave temple, 6 kilometers to the north of Ipoh on Kuala Kangsar Road, it houses over 40 Buddha statues, the central piece being a 12.8-meter-high sitting Buddha. Mystical mural paintings can also be found on its walls. A steep climb up 385 steps rewards one with a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

D.R.Seenivasagam Park - Located at Anderson Road, this park is known for its scenic beauty and recreational facilities. It is immaculately landscaped with numerous species of flowering plants and trees, including the Ipoh tree. Visitors re particularly attracted to the lake where various types of fish can be found. The park is embellished with beautiful arches and a Japanese garden.

Kellie's Castle - A 30-minute drive south of Ipoh towards Batu Gajah brings one to the proud ruins of Kellie's Castle. An aura of mystery envelopes this romantic yet melancholic mansion, built by William Kellie Smith, a wealthy Scottish planter in memory of his wife. Construction of this grand castle-like monument began in 1915 and came to an abrupt halt with the sudden death of its owner in 1926. It is believed to contain secret rooms and underground tunnels.

Gua Tempurung - Locate about 24 kilometers from Ipoh, these ancient caves stretch over a kilometer from Sungai Siput to Kuala Dipang. Gua Tempurung is made up of five domes with ceiling that resemble coconut shells with various formations of stalactite and stalagmites. The entrance to the cave is the vicinity of Gopeng, which has a Visitor's Center for registration as a permit is required to visit the caves.

Kuala Who Recreational Forest Park - For those who enjoy the pleasures afforded by the flora and fauna of tropical forest, the Kuala Who Recreational Park is a place not to be missed. Situated 13 kilometers from the town of Tapah on the road to Cameron Highlands, the park offers interesting walks and treks, with the added excitement of seeing the Raja Brooke butterflies in their natural habitat. Open to campers, the park incorporates a natural hot-water spa at Lubuk Merbau and a 30-meter-long suspension bridge.

Lata Kinjang Waterfalls - 18 kilometers from Tapah, the main attraction of this waterfall is the impressive series of cascades winding down a 100-meter drop. There are parking bay and eating stalls for picnickers. Visitors may also visit an orchid garden and a bamboo park here.

Lata Iskandar Waterfalls - Lying midway between Tapah and Cameron Highlands, this multi-tiered waterfall has pools at the base of each tier. Visitors are usually tempted to go for a dip in its cool waters which have their origins in the upper reaches of the surrounding highlands.

Sungkai Deer Farm - In the vicinity of Sungkai, 82 kilometers south of Ipoh, lies a sprawling 100-hectare deer farm established and managed by the Wildlife Department. Stimulating their natural habitat, here the deer of various species are allowed to roam freely. The farm is also reserved for certain species of birds and other wildlife.
