Chiang Rai is the northern-most province of Thailand, and is about 785 kilometers north of Bangkok and 180 kilometers from the city of Chiang Mai. Enveloping the Kok River basin, the province of Chiang Rai covers an area of approximately 11,678 square kilometres with an average elevation of 580 meters above sea level.

It is truly one of Thailand's most exotic destinations, and within it lies the renowned Golden Triangle where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand converge. For centuries, due to it's natural mountainous boundaries, Chiang Rai was isolated from the rest of Thailand and only became a province in 1910. Fortunately, this isolation resulted in the preservation of the province's unique culture and natural beauty which are now easily accessible for all to appreciate, via excellent roads from Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai's modern international airport.

Today, Chiang Rai is a travelers' paradise endowed with abundant natural tourist attractions and antiquities. Attractions include magnificent mountain scenery and waterfalls, ruins of ancient settlements, historic sites, Buddhist shrines and temples, and the fascinating villages of the hill tribes.

For those interested in the natural side of Chiang Rai, jungle trekking and cycling trails abound. Due to its higher elevations, the climate in Chiang Rai province is comfortably cooler than the rest of the country.
