Five Kilometers south of modern day Chiang Mai on the banks of
the scenic Ping river lies the historic ruins of Wiang Khum
Kham, the first Mon settlement dating back to the 11th
century. Constructed as part of the Haripunchai kingdom
this satellite town was ruined by floods in the 18th
century but visible architecture remains and this is the perfect
place for the start of our ride.
On route to our destination of Lamphun and the Haripunchai
district we ride through quiet country roads and farmlands
and experience the Lanna way of life. Our ride takes us
further into Lycee orchards, rich farmlands with a plethora of
seasonal fruit and vegetable crops including Lamyai, Lycee,
mango, bananas, guavas and coconuts, jackfruit, durian and
dragon fruit, the list goes on. As we pass through small rural
villages and crisscrossing the tranquil Ping river we
encounter smiling faces and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and
stop often to sample the local delights on offer at road-side
stalls and markets.
We enjoy cycling around the ancient city walls of beautiful
Lamphun. This district was originally ruled by legendary Mon
queen Chama Thewi and precedes Chiang Mai by 7 centuries. Its
most famous landmark is one of the oldest and holiest stupas in
Thailand and built in 1044. Lamphun was an important stop on the
trade routes form China and Laos in the North to the Chao Praya
River in the south. Eventually overcome by King Meng Rai in the
13th century was a stronghold with independence of
culture and influence. For lunch we enjoy a tasty, healthy
lunch of delicious Lanna cuisine at a Riverside restaurant
and an opportunity to explore more of Lamphun’s lively
markets.
This
idyllic town is the origin of the Kingdom of a million rice
fields and of great heritage significance!Trip Profile:
