There are 6 major hilltribes in Thailand - Meo
(or Hmong), Yao (or Mien), Karen (or Kariang), Akha
(or Iko), Lahu (or Musoe), and Lisu (or Liso).
Other minorities are not listed here.
These hilltribes live mainly in Chiangmai,
Chiangrai and Mae Hang Son Provinces in Northern Thailand.
We include here the guidelines on trekking
for your safety and convenience:
 | Use the services of only those licensed tour operators and
registered guides. The Authority requires that all tourists going for the Trek should make
registry. Most licensed tour operators will do all the paperwork for you. |
 | Each company has its own itineraries and destinations. Their major
areas visited by trekking groups are Chiang Dao, Wiang Papao, Phrao, Ngao, Mae Chan, Fang,
Chiangrai and Mae Hong Son. |
 | Tourists should have a thorough understanding of the services the
trekking company will provide, such as the number of days of trek, areas to visit, meals
to be provided, etc. |
 | Unlawful drugs are strictly prohibited and illegal. |
 | Never go trekking by yourself without a registered guide. You are
not familiar with the areas, and most important of all, the cultures of different
hill-tribe groups. Although many hilltribes welcome foreign tourists, there are some
tribes who will not tolerate the strangers into their regions without the pre-approval of
their leaders. Be aware of this precaution Very Important! |
 | Help preserve the jungles natural state by not harming
wildlife or causing unintentional sparks which might lead to forest fire. |
