Surin was a part of the Khmer empire. Scattered temple ruins and a large ethnic Khmer population are remnants from that period. Surin today is well-known for its annual Elephant Round Up, which usually takes place in the third week of November and attracts visitors from all over the world. It is 457 kilometers from Bangkok.
Surin seems to be
synonymous to the
Elephant Fair, annually
held in the third
weekend of November.
Although the event is
certainly the highlight,
Surin has also much more
to offer. Once located
right on the pilgrimage
route linking Khmer,
Thailand, and Laos,
Surin is dotted with
many Khmer temples and
monuments, very
interesting to explore.
Its elephant camp,
basketry and
silk-weaving villages
are also of interest. |
