This 6 Days expedition starts from the northern Thailand-Laos Border at Huay Xai to explore the northwestern region of Laos. Take a legendary river cruise along the Mekong River from Huay Xai downstream to Pakbeng and to Luang Prabang. Enjoy dramatic river scenery of the Mekong and romantic meals of sunrise and sunset in the middle of the northern Laos mountains and river. Unearth the world heritage site of Luang Prabang and continue southward to the fascinating capital of Vientiane where you are in touch with historic temples, cultures and lovely people.

Tour Itinerary

DAY 1:  HUAY XAI - PAKBENG

Arrive at Huay Xai, the northern border of Thailand-Laos. On board the Luang Say Lodge and Cruises to cruise downstream to Pakbeng. Get a magnificent scenery of the rural life along the untouched river banks of Mekong River. On the way, a stop to visit a Kamu tribal village at Ban Houy Phalam to see ethnic minority in their daily life activities. Before sunset, the boat arrives at Luang Say Lodge. Dinner is served at the terrace with a romantic scene of the Mekong River.

DAY 2:  PAKBENG - LUANG PRABANG (B)

Enjoy full breakfast at Luang Say Lodge. You may walk to Pakbeng Market to see minority villagers sell their local products - this is optional. At 08:30 a.m. board the boat to continue the cruise from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang. Sop at a local village of Ban Baw, where you can see traditional production process of Lao whiskey. At the mouth of Nam Ou River where the famous Pak Ou Caves and villages reside, the boat stops for a visit at Tham Ting and Tham Phoum Caves; these caves are religious sacred sites where thousands of Buddha statues varied in size, shapes and positions are placed inside for centuries. Arrive at Luang Prabang before sunset. Transfer to the hotel for overnight.

DAY 3:  LUANG PRABANG (B)

Enjoy the first morning in Luang Prabang with your hearty breakfast. Visit Wat Visoun, the most ancient temple in Luang Prabang since 1513 built by the inspiration from the old Khmer temple of Wat Phu in Champassak. It is famous for its “Watermelon Stupa” or That Mak Mo. Nearby visit Wat Aham, or “the Monastery of Opened Heart”, famous for its Laotian stylish sims, roofs and interiors. Continue to Wat Xieng Thong, or “the Temple of Golden City”, said to be the most beautiful temple in Luang Pabang with Laos classic architecture and design. Walk down the main street of Luang Prabang, or “wat street” where there are many temples on lying on both sides. If time permits, you can stop at some of the temples such as Wat Siboun Heuang, Wat Si Moungkhoun, Wat Sop and Wat Sene. Further on to Luang Prabang National Museum, once served as a Royal Palace to the last king of Laos. The museum is closed on Tuesday. Nearby, visit Wat Mai (or New Temple), the largest temple in Luang Prabang and one of the most picturesque temple in Laos with its five-tiered roof, veranda and architecture. In late afternoon, visit to Mount Phousi for sunset. It is a hill, located in the center of the town, and you have to climb 328 steps from the entrance to the top where a small temple lies. At this place, you can see a spectacular view of the whole city and the river. Great photos of Luang Prabang and its river can be taken from the top of Mount Phousi. Overnight at the hotel in Luang Prabang.

DAY 4:  LUANG PRABANG (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today take a trip to the natural wonder of Luang Prabang, the Kuang Si Waterfall. This many cascading steps waterfall offer a serene place for relaxation. The multi-tiered pools are filled with crystalline clear fresh water where you can swim in the mids of high green trees. Nearby visit a native Khmu village of Ban Tha Pene and then to the Ban Xang Khong, well known for its traditional weaving skill of handwoven cotton and silk as well as the production of local paper making. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

DAY 5:  LUANG PRABANG - VIENTIANE (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. Make a farewell from Luang Prabang and fly south to Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. Vientiane is a fascinating capital where you can find old traditional temples and monuments, French-colonial style buildings and boulevards, and meet the very warm people of Vientiane. Start exploring the city with the visit to Pha That Luang, a magnificent golden stupa, whose origin can be dated to the 3rd century when the Indian missionaries sent by King Ahoka built the monastery at the site. Nearby visit Ho Pha Keo, once a Royal temple and a private chapel to the Laotian king, is today a religious museum with Buddhist sculptures. Continue to Wat Si Saket, famous for its cloistered walls with thousand of Buddha images, and Patuxai, or “Gate of Victory”, built in resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 6:  VIENTIANE DEPARTURE (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today free at your own leisure for shopping and traveling in Vientiane. Transfer to the airport for departure.

Fast Fact at Laos

  • The People's Democratic Republic of Lao is located in the centre of Indochina, sharing borders with China to the north, Myanmar to the north-west, Thailand to the west, Cambodia to the south, and Vietnam to the east.
  • Laos enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons - the rainy season from the beginning of May to the end of September and dry season from October through to April.
  • Lao language is the national language. Other languages used are French, English, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese.
  • The Kip is the official currency of Laos.
  • The majority of Lao people are Buddhists.
  • When entering a Wat (Temple) or a private home it is customary to remove one's shoes.
  • In traditional homes one sits on low seats or cushions on the floor. Upon entering guests may be served fruit or tea. These gestures of hospitality should not be refused.
  • The head is considered the most sacred part of the body and the soles of the feet the least, one should not touch a person's head nor use one's foot to point at a person or any object.
  • Men and women rarely show affection in public.
  • Women are forbidden to touch a Buddhist monk.
