Wat That Luang
Rasamahavihane is known
as the "Monastery of the
Royal Stupa." It has
long been associated
with Lao royalty of
Luang Prabang. That
Luang has long been one
of the important ritual
sites for Buddhist,
traditional, and royal
events; the Festival of
the 12th month, or Tat. |
|
|
|
Wat Si Saket |
|
Wat Si Saket is nestled
within a lush tropical
plantation. It is not
the oldest Buddhist
place as many temples
were destroyed during
the wars in the 19th
century. This large
temple (wat) displaying
a strong Thai influence
with some fine, but
fading Buddhist murals,
is home to over 6,000
Buddhas of different
sizes and styles. |

Wat Xieng Thong |
|
This is considered to be
the most magnificent
temple in Luang Prabang
-- the "Golden City" or
"Golden Tree Monastery."
This is saying something
since standards of
breathtaking beauty and
serenity in temple
building in Luang
Prabang are very high.
Xieng Thong is situated
on an embankment above
the Mekong near the
point where it joins the
Nam Khan River and it
often served as the
gateway to the town. |

|
Royal Palace Museum
or "Haw Kham" |
|
This palace was
originally built for
King Sisavang Vong after
the original building
was destroyed by Chinese
Haw invaders in 1887.

completed in 1909. It is
also called Haw Kham

with French
neoclassical. |

Angkor Wat |
|
Angkor, the former capital of the ancient Khmer Empire, is one of the greatest and most spectacular Hindu religious sites in the world. Construction of this elaborate temple complex - built in honour of the god Vishnu - began in AD 879 during the reign of King Suryavarman II and was completed in 1191. It lay concealed for many years, however, until the site was discovered by Frenchman Henri Mahout in 1860. |

|
Angkor Thom |
|
Angkor Thom was built by Cambodia's greatest builder, Jayavarman VII. This ten square kilometer city is enclosed by an eight meter high wall and encircled by a hundred meter moat said to have been inhabited by fierce crocodiles. Access is via causeways over the moat that are flanked by the statues of fifty four Gods on the left and fifty four devils on the right, all seemingly engaged in a game of tug of war. |
|
|
|
Bayon |
|
Bayon is located in the geographical heart of Angkor Thom. The fifty four tower temple is a quite remarkable sight. Initially the temple seems to be a shapeless mass of grey and brown stone but as one approaches one realizes that each of the towers is in fact carved and there are over two hundred huge enigmatic faces of Avalokitesharva bearing down on you wherever you turn. |
