Chiangmai is wonderfully rewarding in its kaleidoscopic attractions and extensive facilities, but it by no means exhausts travel possibilities in the region. To the north, just a short hop by plane or about three hours by road, lies Chiangrai and the “Golden Triangle”, that spellbinding spot where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet.

The town it self has several interesting temples, while easy excursions may by made to a number of fascinating sights. On the banks of the Mekong River is the charming little town of Chiang Sean, where ancient ruins indicate an importance along before Chiangmai was founded.

Due North is Mae Sai, Thailand’s northern most town, and between here and Chiang Rai are some stunning jungle-covered mountains, their slopes dotted with hilltribe villages. Especially worth visiting is Doi Tung, a mountain where Her Royal Highness the Princess
