Ipoh is the state capital of Perak which is largely known to the outside world as a place where tin miners came to seek their fortune in the heydays of the tin industry, modern-day Perak has much to appeal to tourists.

Its eventful history is inevitably connected with tin as the discovery of the slivery-hued metal in 1848 by Long Jaafar resulted in a bustling trade which attracted the Achinese, Burgis, Portuguese, Dutch and Chinese. Feuding between Chinese tin miners in the 1870s was compounded by the succession dispute to the Perak Throne. This paved the way fro the intervention of the British and the imposition of the Pangkor Treaty on the Malay chieftains in 1874. Perak was administered by a British Resident until it became a part of the Federation of Malaya in 1957. The present Royal House traces its origins to Sultan Muzaffar Shah of the Malacca Sultanate.
